Background & Purpose

Basically, those are short games or physical activities. It brings a good mood to the group. It makes it easier to get to know each other and to connect. It also enables a group to stay energized during a long day and to get energized again, for example after lunch. All of us know many of those games. It is always good to have a couple of them in mind. It is also always fun – after the ice is broken – to ask if someone from the group wants to introduce an energizer.

A check out is a good way to end a meeting. It is an open but structured space provided to each participant to express themselves one last time. A check out usually takes place in a circle. It can be guided by a question, like “what is clear to me now and what still needs to be clarified?”. If time is running out, or in big groups, you can also do a “one word check-out” or a check-out with 3 shared claps. There are plenty of possibilities. It can also be non-related to the meeting, like “what are you looking forward to in the next few days”.

Due to the trend of digital nomadism, we sometimes lack face-to face time with each other. A Jour Fixe can be the simple agreement to work together at an agreed time and with agreed frequency. Teamwork will be fostered when all team members try to be present at the same time, for example for half a day a week. Meeting times can be reduced and work can become more efficient by applying this practice.

One person asks a question which needs to be answered without pause and minimal hesitation in exactly five words by all other participants. The game works especially well in pairs.

The “Yes, and” game is an incredibly simple but effective way to get you out of a rut, to get your creative juices going, to generate ideas, to say things you always wanted to say but were scared to do so, etc.

One person starts off by stating an idea and then the next person says “yes, and…” and then simply adds their own idea. The pace should be quite fast and there’s no pausing allowed.

This will generate some obvious ideas, but as there is no space for critical reflection, the creative absurdity (and real innovation) starts to manifest.

When the conversation get’s tough and our energy is going down, I suggest going #outside to get some perspective.

When there is a negative tension that is unlikely to be resolved, a creative disturbance can be very helpful: making a conscious choice to change your current environment and enter into a more open space (especially outdoors) is a an opportunity to:
* take a moment of reflection (during the transition)
* put the situation into perspective literally and metaphorically

Try initiating the change by voicing your personal need for going outside.
