Sense and Respond

Sense and Respond

Time frame:

Ongoing usage
Complexity: 5/5

Background & Purpose

Organisations base their strategies on what they sense the world is asking from them. This is a shift of mindset from command and control. Instead of focusing on operational excellence to efficiently make and sell products and services that customers were predicted to want, an adaptive organisation is designed to sense and respond effectively to what is actually happening. Look 20 years ahead, and plan only for the next day.

Work as collective

Work as collective

Time frame:

Ongoing usage
Complexity: 4/5

Background & Purpose

Sometimes working with friends on a freelance basis is just not enough but you don’t want to set up a formal company with a structure and full-time employment. At Open Space we decided to work in the form of a collective that brings diverse people together. We are still freelancers but there is a theme that unites us (in our case it is the participatory methods and sustainability in Bulgaria). It allows us to run projects independently, and also join forces for common bigger projects. We have a formal company to deal with admin and finances.

Intention setting

Intention setting

Time frame:
Punctual usage

Complexity: 2/5

Background & Purpose

When a project team comes together it is useful to set an agenda beforehand. However, more important is to align ourselves on the spot so we manage the expectations for the meeting. A good way is to state clearly and aloud our intentions for the meeting just after the check in and before we get into the detailed agenda and workflow.

Reframing

Reframing

Background & Purpose

Remember who said this? “Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them.” You are right, Albert Einstein.
Many times when we see things in one way (our natural understanding of a problem or situation) it is hard to see it in another way, and it requires from us a many times difficult but necessary paradigm shift.

If you browse online you will find many resources and tools to help you and your team shift the lens on a situation.

Wisdom Walks

Wisdom Walks

Time frame:

Punctual usage
Complexity: 1/5
More info: http://www.symbiose.li

Background & Purpose

Wisdom Walks is a simple tool that can help creativity flow and foster a meaningfull, unstructured conversation. It involves going on a walk – alone or with one or more team members. It helps to set a general topic or guiding question. There should be space for free conversation around the topic as well as for silance. However, it supports the process to announce the walk or hike as a wisdom walk and set an expectation what you wish to get out of it. Project idea development, strategy and decision-making could be tackled like this.
